Some pics of the new DH trail in Cherok To'kun, Bukit Mertajam, Penang. It's also suitable for adventurous XC riders. Some minor bumps, trunks and corners. Not sure about the altitude, but it's about 2.5km long. If anyone got more info on the trail please share with me.

Sebenarnya aku dah lama nak kayuh.. tapi aku rasa lepas balik kayuh OFF ROAD bulan 6 lepas.. MERIDA aku kena pantang sebab dah buat hal... rim dia gelong lepas aku cuba naik kat kawasan matang sorang2.. Tapi masih tak hantar repair pun.. Malaih.. dok tangguh2 sampai laa hari nie.. AKU NEKAD.. untuk lepas pantang kayuh... So lepas bangun tido aku kata, mau tak mau aku mesti kayuh sampai bandar Kuching dan update blog MATKEDAH.COM related to mtb xtvties....

Boring menunggu aku ambik laaa gambar.. Nampak gunung tu.. Itu laa Gunung Serapi..setiap hari kerja aku akan ke Gunung Serapi sebab POLITEKNIK KUCHING betul-betul terletak kat bawah kaki Gunung Serapi.

Abg Feirus... memang cool saja... Best dengar cerita org banyak experience dlm beskal nie.. Dia nie plan nak tour Europe in next 2-3 years... Good Luck bro...

Berhenti kejap kat tepi jalan.. Abg Feirus checking his LPG piping connection before continue the journey.. aku dah risau dah sebab meter minyak keta Arena dia dah "E"... kedai minyak pun terletak 80km ahead... So tawakal sajalah katanya...

On the way.. few cars / jeep over take us.... mungkin semua dah tak sabar....

Sematan take left.. another 24km.. Lundu right only 3km.. but we are going to Sematan.. Sematan here I come.....

Dah pun sampai.. Off load all the MTB....

Kemudian masuk Off road kembali, single trail... sebelum sampai kat Kampung Pueh... Lepas refill air kat situ kamera aku dah kehabisan bateri (fully out)... Tak dapat aku snap gambar lagi... Tapi yang boleh aku cerita kat sini, lepas keluar dari kampung Pueh, kami Off road lagi menerusi kawasan sawah padi (kalau kat Kedah kita panggil jalan atas batas Ban).. berapa kilo aku tak ingat dah... Lepas tu masuk kembali jalan On road yang kami mula-mula kayuh petang tadi... Kami complete ride at 9.30pm.. Wow.. dan aku sampai rumah 11.45pm.. memang BERBALOI...

Kledang Hill

We climbed the Keldang Hill (Bukit Kledang). The hill is located in a town called Menglembu. Menglembu is a town in Ipoh city areas.

Light Lane Concept

This little design-thing called Light Lane, caught my eye while I was browsing the web. Thanks to Alex Tee and Evan Gant of Altitude for this brilliant and ingenious idea.

What this concept attempts to do is make the streets a tiny bit safer for city bicycle riders. A device attaches to the back of your bicycle and projects an instant bicycle lane onto the road, as this picture show. That way, you can whip about town without a care in the world, knowing that you’re letting other dirvers know that, hey, this here is a bicycle lane.

I applaud the imagination behind this.

“FUN RIDE, SG LEMBU”

07 Dis – 0800H. Today, cuaca is good. Last night Chicken Sim call me, ajak berkayuk at trek Sg Lembu starting from Check point 2 (BM Cross Country Trail). Him talk to me “Man, BM CC you tak habis kayuh from CP 2 hingga CP 3 itu pasal SK Tan eskot you”. So, me ambil keputusan tidak mengikut Group Robert, Marvick ke Pulau Betong, Penang. Tepat jam 0805, “Botak” sampai . 6 Penunggang pada pagi ini termasuk seorang wanita. Oleh kerana kamera aku satu lagi my cousin pinjam pergi holiday terpaksalah aku gunakan kamera berformat Video. Oleh kerana gambar yang dirakamkan tidak berapa jelas, terpaksalah aku edit mengikut taste aku.

23 NOV 2008 - Mahang, Kedah.

Lebih 50 peserta telah mengambil bahagian pada kali ini. Kayuhan ini dikoordinasikan oleh Robert Choo and Gang. Turut serta mengiringi kayuhan adalah kenderaan pengiring terdiri 3 x (Kenderaan 4x4 dan 2 x Motosikal Scrambler). Uncle Chicken Sim bertindak sebagai logistik atau sebagai penyediaan makanan pada hari tersebut dengan menggunakan produk “PACIFIC WEST”. Tepat jam 0845H, kami mula kayuh masuk ke kawasan trek balak lebih kurang 2 km untuk sarapan pagi. 0900H dengan cuaca yang baik kami meneruskan perjalanan dalam perjalanan ini memang banyak dugaan dan keperitan yang di tempuhi. Laluan balak yang berlumpur melebihi paras lutut memang memeritkan . Kegembiraan menjelma bila sampai di check point dengan aliran arus air terjun melupakan sekejap tentang perjalanan untuk sampai ke tempat ini. Dengan sajian oleh CHEF UNCLE SIM memang menyelerakan. Saksikan gambar-gambar yang di ambil oleh Michael (Blogger). Gambar-gambar yang beliau ambil boleh dikategorikan “Pro”. Ucapan terima kasih untuk semua yang menjayakan program untuk kali ini. Jumpa lagi pada kayuhan akan datang.

BUKIT MERTAJAM CROSS COUNTRY 2008

BM CC telah berlalu, banyak pengalaman yang telah kita perolehi suka duka sepanjang 2008. Bagi pendapat saya, pada tahun hadapan DI HARAP SEMUA KEJOHANAN MTB DI SELARASKAN PADA TARIKH YANG TIDAK SAMA ANTARA SATU SAMA LAIN DI MALAYSIA. Ini membolehkan peminat MTB tanahair memasuki kejohanan/Jamboree yang di anjurkan dengan lebih teratur. Ini juga membantu membolehkan penunggang MTB itu membuat persiapan awal. Saya harap ada pihak yang sudi dapat mengkoordinasikan tarikh-tarikh pada tahun 2009. Saya juga cadangkan selain Jamboree diadakan juga pertandingan mencari harta karun berbasikal (MTB). Mr Seong(tts617), Sim Nai Nai, Marvick,Jane, ....................etc. Servey......................Kebanyakan penunggang MTB, ialah menunggang sambil riadah. Mencari bukit-bukit, fotografi,kenalan dan bertukar-tukar pendapat mengenai basikal dan sebagainya. Biar apapun “SAFETY FIRST”.
Kali ini saya, publiskan sebahagian gambar-gambar menarik sepanjang BM CC 2009 yang mana menarik perhatian saya yang telah di tangkap oleh 14 jurugambar dari pelbagai sudut. Kesemua gambar melebihi 4 ribu keping. Ucapan terima kasih kepada jurufoto Canon, 007, Calvin,Chia Nien,Lim TH, LP, Nicky Ooi,SF Wong,Yunelee,Zheng Ming, Mr Sim Nai n Gang. BM Cross Country telah melabuhkan tirainya. Bagi aku trek ini memang paling best,kalau tidak lincin. Trek downhill memang ........boleh beri 5 star. Tapi yang tidak bestnya single trek.... mini tar. memang aku fobia trek macam itu. Walaubagaimanapun aku ucapkan tahniah kepada pengelola yang telah bertungkus lumus bagi menjayakan acara buat pertama kali di adakan di Bukit Mertajam (trek baru)dengan jayanya. Aku harap next year akan diadakan lagi. Tapi .........harap tidak melebihi mengangkat basikal daripada kayuh. Tq Uncle Chicken Sim, follow me to check point 3.

BUKIT LANGKAP TRAINNING FOR BM CROSS COUNTRY

02 Nov - Bukit Langkap, Mengkuang, Bukit Mertajam. Pada jam lebih kurang 0830H aku sampai kat Kedai Makan Bunga Kertas. Aku lihat Ang dan .......... (lupa nama) sudah sampai. Itu yang bestnya join dengan dia orang masa memang tepat. Kemudian Kamsol pun sampai. Dia suruh aku bergerak dahulu dan tunggu di check point 1. Sebenarnya hari ini ramai tak ikut serta ke Bkt Langkap kerana ada yang pergi jejak trek BM Cross Country. Aku yang tak kuat nie terpaksalah pilih Bkt langkap dahulu untuk mencari angin. Hari ini memang best, bila kami sampai di check point 1, Kamsol dan kawan dia pun sampai. Dia orang nie memang kuat roadbike pun main. Hari ini 5 penunggang menoroka Bkt Langkap. Seterusnya kami ke kemuncak Bkt Langkap menghayati pemandangan Empangan Mengkuang dan seterusnya melayan “downhill”. Bila sampai ke Ladang Getah, Ang mengajak kami mengikut trek paip gas, aku cadangkan kita tidak mengikut laluan Paip Gas kerana ada lubang di sebalik rumput itu akan membahayakan penunggang. Kami pergi juga ke Paip Gas dan menggunakan trek di sebelahnya. Memang aku puas kayuh hari ini. Total Distance 16 KM. Ini belum cukup 40 KM yang mana BM CC diadakan. ANG you memang kuat, bawa basikal “DOWNHILL” AKU RESPECK pada kau. Aku akan mula cuti mulai 04 Nov hingga 10 Nov bagi aku membuat persiapan mental dan fizikal sebelum BM CC bermula. Pada 04 Nov, kepada sesiapa yang berminat nak join aku kayuh, di persilakan.................Aku akan latih cara untuk meningkatkan stamina mengikut pengalaman aku dalam tentera dan MTB di satukan. Untuk pengetahuan anda trek BM Cross Country memang mencabar kalau sesiapa yang tidak cukup latihan, stamina, mental akan kecundang di tengah jalan. Biar kayuh perlahan yang penting adalah penamatnya. Jangan sampai baru permulaan sudah semput............

HARDTAIL BIKE

I love hardtails besause they’s so simple there’s no power loss, everything’s fast and responsive and they don’t let you get away with anything, so they force you to learn good technique. You have to learn to ride properly on a hardtail, and you can take those skills to full suspension, but it doesn’t work the other way round. Recently, I bought myself a pair of new Kenda Koyote tire and mounted it on my LeRun mountian bike. The prices is around RM76 (USD 20). My previous tire was from Maxxis, and I still keep it for my street cycling.

Obviously, I felt the differences of these 2 tires, and I tried to surf on internet to get a better understanding of it, however to my dissapointment, I can not locate any Kenda Koyote tire even in Kenda website. I started to worry whether I have bought an immitated copy of Kenda tires.... summore it printed there as "Made in China".....haiiiih

In my effort of searching, I came across the article below, and I would like to share it with my fellow friends in Pawana Riders. Let's cycle with knowledge, enjoy the reading

Tire pressure is a very important facet of riding any kind of bike, including mountain bikes. By learning how to set the tire pressure, you can give yourself more control and help to make the ride down the mountain smoother. If the tire pressure is too low, then you will find that it is much harder to cycle and it can increase the chance of a flat, too. Tire pressure that is too high can make your ride very bumpy and out of control, as well.

Tire pressure can vary from person to person, because it is dependent upon the personal preference of the bicycler, the tire’s condition, and the terrain that you will be riding on. The tire pressure can be easily modified simply by using a high quality pump on the tires. A tire pressure gauge is also an essential part of keeping your tires at the optimum pressure.

The manufacturer of the tire will have a recommended tire pressure for your particular tires and this is where you can start. You can then adjust the tire pressure as needed from there. It is best to use the same tire pressure gauge and pump when you check your tires, because you may get different readings depending upon the tire pressure gauge that you choose.

A good rule of thumb is to start with a higher tire pressure for your bike. This means that you want to be around 40-50 psi (3-3.5 bar), and then lower the tire pressure a little at a time to find which tire pressure is best for your particular bike, terrain, and yourself. If you are a little heavier, then you will want to use a higher tire pressure for sure.

Taking a test bike ride is the best way to check the tire pressure. You will want to notice how the tire behaves, how it rides on the terrain, how it slides down the mountain, and how it hooks in the corners. If you have too much tire pressure, then drop it in increments of 5 psi in both tires. If the bike gains grip and is more stable at this tire pressure, then you will want to keep it at this standard pressure. If not, then you will continue dropping the tire pressure in small increments and redoing the test until your bike rides the way you want and need it to.

If you want to determine the lowest possible tire pressure, then gradually decrease the tire pressure until you see how it feels when you ride on almost flat tires. This will help you to learn how it feels so that you can keep your tubes from getting damaged.

If your mountain bike tires are tubeless, then you will want to stay with a lower tire pressure. The advised tire pressure for tubeless tires is between 30 and 40 psi. This is because tubeless tires experience fewer pinch flats and even rim contact occasionally is okay. This is why you can ride on tires with a much lower tire pressure than normal. If the tire pressure is too low, you will find that if you are cornering hard that the tire will roll under the rim.

Another thing that you need to be on the lookout for is rolling resistance. The increased rolling resistance will take more effort, but it will offer you greater control and better traction to allow you to climb easier. For racers who race cross-country, they would rather have a more efficient bike versus greater control, so you have to take into consideration what kind of biking that you will be doing.

Using your hand to squeeze the tire will help you determine what the right tire pressure feels like so that you do not have to rely so much on the tire pressure gauge.

We went to what we left off last recce. We managed to puncture out and found the missing link this time. It was not an easy ride. I could feel my heart was about to explode after I finished the climb that takes me to the tar road, which was the remnent of the adbandoned golf course that we never completed. Along the way we also found some potential trail that's worth exploring in future. The ride started at around 9am after we got my highschool buddy showed up and ended at noon. Total distance traveled, 7.2km.

1hb march (14days countdown before my Akad Nikah day). Hari nie awal pagi aku sms Adi.. "Macam mana jadi ke tak?" dia terus call kata "Jadi laaaa" . So 6.15am aku terus mandi dan sembahyang subuh. Bersiap dalam keadaan kalut aku pun dapat bertolak ke Changloon pada pukul 6.50am.

7.30am sampai kat Restoran Ahmediah Pokok Ceri. Rupanya Adi pun baru sampai juga.. Tengok keliling tak ada rupa rider lain pun. Akhirnya member Adi muncul.. last-last kami bertiga saja. Adi cakap aku dia tak mau ajak ramai orang sebab takut tak jadi recce hari nie.. Hujan lebat kat Alor Setar dari malam tadi

Tak mau cite banyak. trail hari nie adalah jenis XC. Recce sampai dalam kawasan bekas laluan 4WD. Pi balik 32km (off road lebih kurang 20km++). Menarik dan mungkin akan memanjang laluan di masa hadapan. Jumpa babi hutan..

MTB recce at Green Hill

We went recce at Greenhill this Sunday. I have been looking forward to this recce since I found out about Greenhill a while ago. There was a downhill trail that I was told it would come out at around Farlim area. I managed to drag my usual recce buddiesto go with me. Since they have not been riding for some time, I had to convince them it was a walk in a park. It was really a walk in the park when we started from Bukit Gambier. We were greeted by few cyclists, thinking we were newbies(we dressed like one!). It took us no time to reach the ta kiosk since we all were quite familiar with the trail. After a short break, we proceed to the trail that we wanted to recce.

My recce buddy, Andy the Greenhornet, tried his luck by descending the step slope. Forgot to take a video though!

Halfway was a junction. The trail on the left goes to Greenhill.

Not all trails are rideable in Green Hill. Seeing here are my buddies doing the hard work to portage their bikes up to the peak. They must have been cursing me left and right!

Greenhornet launched his bike down on a very steep slope. I have been to Kiara trail once. It is very similar with Kiara trail!

You see any trail at all? This is where we came down from the peak! We virtually slided down!

Fatt gave up and threw his bike down the slope!

Sheldon Brown: 1944-2008

Sheldon Brown, the human encyclopedia of bicycling knowledge and a famous employee of Harris Cyclery in Massachusetts, died of a massive heart attack Sunday evening, February 3, according to his wife Harriet.

The 63-year-old bicycle expert was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in August 2007, limiting his prior upright bicycling and workload. His many trademarks include a longish gray leprechaun beard and shaved head. He was also well-known for patiently and thoroughly answering his 500 - 1000 daily emails.

Our thoughts are with Brown's family during their time of loss. His contributions to the bicycle industry were great, and his enduring legacy shall be greater.

Following are some of the pics taken during the gotong-royong at Cherok Tokun. Track is almost completed, just some minor cleaning up then it will be ready to ride. For those who helped on that day, THANK YOU!!!

Anyone who wishes to visit nd try the track can do so. Just ride up the tarmac hill for about 1.5km, just about 100m before reaching the 'Malaysia Boleh' rest area, there will be a wooden ladder on the right leading to the top and into the forest. Climb up, turn right, and you shall be able to see the trail.

Ride slow and safe, as track is still new and slippery when wet.
Be aware of sharp corners and very steep decends. Cheers~

Gotong-Royong @ Cherok To'kun

BMC Team Elite 2008 - CANCELLED

BMC has announced that it has temporarily dropped the all-carbon fibre Team Elite 01 hardtail mountain bike frame from its 2008 range. The Swiss company has not specified exact reasons behind its decision, but did state that it was having difficulties meeting its rigorous quality standards tests during the latest production run.

"In fact, the rollout of this product started in 2007, but from the very beginning, technical obstacles in the serial production impeded the effective delivery into the several international markets successfully competed by BMC," read a release from the company. "Until last week, the Swiss manufacturer of high-end bikes hoped, together with its manufacturing partner in Taiwan, to be able to handle in due time the important quality fluctuations within the serial production.

"Unfortunately BMC failed to convert exactly the claimed quality level of the prototypes into the serial production," it continued.

Retail customers unfortunately won't be able to place orders for the new frame, but BMC insisted that its production issues would not affect existing agreements with its sponsored athletes and teams. According to BMC, only a later run of the bike is affected by the technical production issue and there are enough TE01 frames in existence that have already passed inspections to fulfil those obligations.

"In the customer's interest and in respect of the good label image of BMC, this very difficult decision had to be made," said BMC's statement. "BMC deeply regrets to disappoint in 2008 numerous potential customers who waited for a long time the delivery of their dream hardtail bike."

Despite the disappointment the company believes its decision is testament of its aim of ensuring it sells only the highest quality product to its customers globally. /GJ

MTB-Urban Freeride 2008 @ QB

This coming Sunday, April 20th, for a beginner/intermediate skill-building urban-mtb freerider to be held at Queensbay Mall, Penang.

Enjoy a special build trail-park concept, trail features under the tutelage of our experienced guides. This urban freeriders challenge is the first mtb-city dicipline ever in Penang as well in Malaysia to take place to win the best prizes money in this sport. Taking mountian-bike into the cities, a new discipline emerged which originated from riding in the streets, forest and hill-side into one competition format comprises a set course resembling an urban setting where riders after the other will try to tackle obstacles such as concrete objects, benches, stairs, sandbags, wooden ramps structure, etc. with as much style/skills as possible.

This challenge will take into four major categories which is Men's Junior Open [M/J/O] age under 18, Teen Open [T/O] age under 18, Men's Open [M/O], and Veteran Open [V/O] age above 35. All the categories/riders use to ride through several obstacles that located in close proximity to one another to enable the rider to jump or ride through from one object/ramp to the next and show off his individual style/skills.

Judging criteria are not only based around riders creative use of the course but also their execution of tricks, behavior and time each other.

Ipoh Fellowship Ride - March 23rd 2008

Greetings all Fellow Mountain Bikers...

The Ipoh Fellowship Ride returns for 2008 with more happy trails from Ulu Kinta, near the historical town of Tanjung Rambutan.

Take in the lush greenery as you flow through singletracks, bomb down descends, suffer up the "occasional" lung-busting climb and pass thru Orang Asli villages....heck, we might even throw in a stream crossing or two - just for good measure!!

Take the opportunity to mingle with the locals...who knows, they might even invite you into their homes for white coffee!

Yep,even the local Asli's have white coffee - it's that good*!

So...come for the Ride,stay for the Food and "Ta Pau" home the memories!
